Marburg's Mudflats
09/12/2007 - 02:12
Lake Marburg in Pennsylvania is actually an artificial lake created by the damming of Codorus Creek. The dam is owned by a P.H. Glatfelter paper company and serves it's industrial needs. The community benefits from the state park created around the lake (Codorus State Park). Plenty of fishing, boating, kayaking, yada, yada, yada...
Around this time of year, the water level at the lake is lowered exposing various mud flats and rock formations. This is very beneficial to the myriad of birds that migrate or live here - including bald eagle, osprey, heron, egret, geese, pipers, plovers, and various types of ducks and gulls. The lake has been designated an important bird area by the Audubon Society ( Click here for pdf summary ).
This is a photo of one of the mud flats. The texture on the water surface is the aquatic plant life breaching the surface. Get to close to the water's edge here, and you will end up knee-deep in mud. Ask me how I know....
